Làng Tôi is a 'bamboo cirque' — a form that blends contemporary circus skills, aerial work, contortion and juggling with Vietnamese folk imagery and live traditional music. Rather than sequins and spotlights, its raw materials are bamboo poles, woven baskets and the movements of village life. The bamboo is both set and apparatus: the same poles that become a bridge become something to climb, swing from and balance on. It's circus repurposed to tell a rooted, local story.
Lune Production
The show belongs to Lune Production, the company that has done more than anyone to bring this bamboo-cirque form to international audiences. Their shows share a language — bamboo, live folk music, non-verbal storytelling, a company of acrobat-dancers — but each stages a different corner of Vietnamese life. Làng Tôi was among the works that established the style, touring internationally before settling into regular runs at home. Booking one of their shows is the easiest way to see this distinctly Vietnamese contemporary performance.
The company on stage
A Làng Tôi performance is carried by a modest company — on the order of fifteen to eighteen performers — working in close coordination, since raising a bamboo bridge or house frame is a feat of collective timing as much as individual skill. In an intimate theatre you see that teamwork up close: the passing and locking of poles, the musicians shifting with each scene, the whole village built and lived in by a small ensemble. It's the opposite of an arena show — human-scale, detailed and present.
Tradition made contemporary
What makes the form compelling is the meeting of old and new. The instruments, the folk melodies, the village imagery and the bamboo itself are traditional; the circus vocabulary, the staging and the wordless, image-driven storytelling are modern. Làng Tôi doesn't preserve village life behind glass so much as set it moving on a contemporary stage. For visitors it offers something neither a museum nor a nightclub can — a living, artful version of the Vietnam that shaped the country.
